How Rico adapts to different planning approaches and projects

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

When planners first hear of Rico, they often get the impression that it is a pre-made or standardised template for preparing resource consent applications. This isn’t totally off either, after all, Rico does bring some structure to resource consent preparation work.

However, at Rico, we are very wary of one-size-fits-all approaches. Most planners have developed their own approach to planning through years of experience. Putting unnecessary constraints on this limits their opportunity to best respond to planning issues, deliver great results for clients, and build business reputation and brand.

That’s why Rico has been designed as a flexible workflow instead of a fixed template. Different teams have different approaches to planning and different applications require different responses. Rico accommodates these differences through three key areas of flexibility.

1. Rico generates reports in your unique company format

When it comes to report templates, every planning team has their own unique report structure and company formatting.

Rico enables you to generate reports in full company formatting with a click. Upon signup, we will configure Rico to use the formatting from your existing template. Reports downloaded from Rico are also in a flexible Word document format, allowing you to make any further tweaks. This means you can keep your own unique template style while eliminating time spent setting up and formatting reports.

2. Rico adapts to the unique information requirements of different applications

The sections of the Plan and Resource Management Act that are relevant differ for every resource consent application.

Rico’s workflow adapts to this, starting each application by detecting the relevant sections of the planning framework that relate to a proposal’s various characteristics and planning issues.

Once all the relevant sections to assess are added, Rico’s workflow helps you systematically provide the required information and assessments without missing any considerations.

3. You have total freedom to make planning assessments your way

When addressing specific planning issues, the approach to providing an assessment differs depending on the issue at hand.

Rico lets you write your assessments much like you would type them in a Word document, only helping you along the way.

Where a common planning issue arises, you may want to provide a standardised response. Rico allows you to easily import assessments of similar issues from a previous project. Behind the scenes, the software is organising all the assessments you make into your own template library, so you can easily leverage existing knowledge.

Where a new planning issue comes up, or a proposal has unique characteristics, you may want to form an assessment from scratch. Rico helps by pulling in relevant planning considerations (such as matters, assessment criteria, objectives and policies) that help inform your assessment and ensure you cover the important considerations.

The Bottom Line

Rico provides flexibility where you need it most. By handling undifferentiated manual work, it gives you more time for higher-value work. By getting out of your way, it gives you space to form the best response to the situation at hand. These come together to help produce better applications, better results for your clients and better business.
